White Sands, NM

After Sun Spot we drove to White Sands, NM.  It took a little over an hour.  The temperature went from 53F at Sun Spot to 82F at White Sands.  It was a good thing I layered my clothing that morning.

On our way to White Sands we had to pass thru this tunnel.

The first picture is part way into White Sands where some plants are around.  A little farther in the pavement quit and the sand is graded to create roadways.

At the farthest point into White Sands, all you can see is white sand.  Amazing to see.

Sun Spot, NM

After Timberon, we went to Sun Spot, NM at 9200 ft elevation.  It is not a community but rather a research center that studies the sun.  Here is one of the telescopes called the Tower.  There is 132 feet above ground and 228 feet below ground.

From the lookout at Sun Spot we could see White Sands, NM.

We had our picnic lunch outside at the visitor’s center.  The temperature at that time, 12:30 pm, was 56F.

Timberon, NM

Monday, Sept 23rd we headed for Timberon via the back way.  The road got narrow and rough in places.  I didn‘t think to take pictures of the places where trees had fallen across the road and only the center removed to make the road passable.  Below are a couple of pictures along the way to Timberon.

We own a 1 acre lot at Timberon.  We went to see the development and to take pictures of our lot.  It is really a pretty lot.   There are several neighbors with permanent houses around our lot.

If you have an emergency and since there is not cell phone service, you must go to the public phone booth!

Deer Spring RV Park

After 9 hrs driving, we arrived at Deer Spring RV Park in Mayhill, NM about 3:30 pm MT.  Beautiful with lots of trees.  However the trees made it hard to park. But once we were parked, the shade was nice.  There was even a stream at the back of the property.  Most people had already left for the season.  This park has 60 spaces and is only open from April 1 - Oct 31.  Cost is $25/night for full hook ups with either 30amp or 50amp. Be sure to call to make sure they have room.  www.deerspringrvpark.net

Tres Rios stands for 3 rivers.  Squaw Creek is one, Brazos river and Paluxy river is the 3rd.  The big river on the lower left is the Brazos.  Squaw Creek is in the April blog and I did not get a picture of the Paluxy.

One day we went into Glen Rose and took the “River Walk” along the Paluxy.

A different part of the park had a short historic walk.  Here is the original Lanham Mill Schoolhouse.

On to the Wheeler-Epps-McMahon house which was moved to this park.

I missed getting the name on this house.  It was larger and and from the early 1900’s.

Then there was CPL Rhett Butler’s memorial.

The temperatures were in the 100’s the whole weekend, so our walks were in the LATE evenings.  We did make it to the pool a couple of times, but did not take any pictures.

We drove around to the other side of the lake across the dam.  Here are views from there.  We cannot even see our campground.

We had a fun weekend spending time with the family.
