Styx River RV Park - Robertsdale, AL

April 6, our drive from Vidalia, LA to here was beautiful.  Below are a few pictures along the route.

 We were surprised when this tunnel came up.

This is the entrance to Styx River RV Resort where we are staying.  We got parked and set up just before the rain started.  It rained until about 10:30 am the next morning.  We even had a tornado watch until 3 am this morning.  Our first time while being full-time in the coach.  We decided we could not do anything so we went to sleep.  We woke up and nothing eventful.  Now we can check that off the list.  We decided we don't need to experience that again. :-)

After it quit raining, we drove into town to Piggly Wiggly to pick up a few items.  After putting groceries away and having lunch we walked around this RV Park.

Here is a walkway down to Styx River.  It is really lush and green here.

 The river is swollen from all the rain we got.  We heard on TV that there was about 4" here.  The water was flowing very quickly.  Tic threw a long stick in and we watched it move quickly down river.

Vidalia, LA

We drove to Vidalia, LA today and are at River View RV Park right on the Mississippi River.

Here is the bridge across the Mississippi that goes from Vidalia, LA to Nachez, MS.  See the gambling boat on the right side of the picture.

We decided to walk the park.  Below is the club house and in the forefront you see a grass basketball court.  Ever played basket ball on a grass court?

We were looking forward, with some degree of anticipation, to finding a restaurant serving fried catfish. Being on the Mississippi River we thought that would be easy.  But to our surprise we could not find any.  So back to the coach and left overs for dinner.

After dark the same bridge as above was beautifully lit up.

Wednesday April 2^nd, 2014
Today was the day that we were going to pull out about 1 pm and start our new adventure on the road.

Best laid plans and all of that, the awning over the slide-out would not retract.  A visit to Ace hardware for repair parts had us fixed up, but we were late leaving.  Did not pull out until about 4:00PM.  Of course, that made our destination arrival time after dark.  Narrow, blacktop roads and rain.  Tic was driving 50 where the speed limit was 70, just to be cautious.  Fortunately, there was not much traffic.   Safe arrival and our hosts had left clear directions for us to get parked.

Thursday April 3^rd, 2014
This is the very well-marked entry sign to the Escapees RV Park in Livingston, TX.  This is where our new domicile address is located.

 Our first official day as full-time RVers.  We got up early and got the coach weighed and height measured.  We need to lose about 500 lbs from the front end.  I suppose Tic and I could get out.

Actually it was suggested that we only carry about 1/3 a tank of fresh water and that would fix the problem. 

We were anxious to actually see where our address was, physically, you know, geographically.  Can we actually see it?  Yes!

We are located behind this building.  This is Escapees headquarters!

We decided to walk the grounds of the complex.  BIG place!

This beautiful azalea bush was in someone's front yard.  Some people have permanent lots. 

We had a really nice parking spot.  We were right across the street from the shower and laundry facilities.  

We saw the quilting club having their get together on Thursday morning.

On Thursday afternoon we listened to a bluegrass band at the Care Center.

 Friday April 4th, 2014

In the morning, we went in town and changed our driver's licenses to have our new address. That afternoon Dusty got ambitious and washed the whole coach and then cleaned the windows.  This gives a whole new meaning to "house cleaning".

Friday evening they showed the movie Saving Mr. Banks.  Dusty had been wanting to see this movie so it was neat to see it for free.  They even served popcorn and goodies at no cost.

White Sands, NM

After Sun Spot we drove to White Sands, NM.  It took a little over an hour.  The temperature went from 53F at Sun Spot to 82F at White Sands.  It was a good thing I layered my clothing that morning.

On our way to White Sands we had to pass thru this tunnel.

The first picture is part way into White Sands where some plants are around.  A little farther in the pavement quit and the sand is graded to create roadways.

At the farthest point into White Sands, all you can see is white sand.  Amazing to see.

Sun Spot, NM

After Timberon, we went to Sun Spot, NM at 9200 ft elevation.  It is not a community but rather a research center that studies the sun.  Here is one of the telescopes called the Tower.  There is 132 feet above ground and 228 feet below ground. 

From the lookout at Sun Spot we could see White Sands, NM.

We had our picnic lunch outside at the visitor’s center.  The temperature at that time, 12:30 pm, was 56F.

Timberon, NM

Monday, Sept 23rd we headed for Timberon via the back way.  The road got narrow and rough in places.  I didn‘t think to take pictures of the places where trees had fallen across the road and only the center removed to make the road passable.  Below are a couple of pictures along the way to Timberon.

We own a 1 acre lot at Timberon.  We went to see the development and to take pictures of our lot.  It is really a pretty lot.   There are several neighbors with permanent houses around our lot.

If you have an emergency and since there is not cell phone service, you must go to the public phone booth!

Deer Spring RV Park

After 9 hrs driving, we arrived at Deer Spring RV Park in Mayhill, NM about 3:30 pm MT.  Beautiful with lots of trees.  However the trees made it hard to park. But once we were parked, the shade was nice.  There was even a stream at the back of the property.  Most people had already left for the season.  This park has 60 spaces and is only open from April 1 - Oct 31.  Cost is $25/night for full hook ups with either 30amp or 50amp. Be sure to call to make sure they have room.  www.deerspringrvpark.net  
 

 Many refugees from Texas come here to escape the heat.
