Van Horn, TX

Thursday, October 16

Today we left Las Cruces headed to Van Horn, TX.
As we crossed the border into Texas there was a 3D Texas Star mounted on both sides of the highway.
As we got out of El Paso, we were surprised to see the speed limit went to 80 mph.  Obviously in the motorhome we were not going to go anywhere near that speed.
A little further outside of El Paso all traffic was diverted off I-10 through a border patrol check point.  I, Dusty, happen to be driving.  They stopped each car and talked to the driver.  All they asked us was "Are you US citizens?"  I answered yes and we were waved on.  They did not even ask to see a drivers license or any ID.  Why bother????
As we drove into Van Horn, we liked this sign we saw on the side of this building.  Van Horn does not have too much to offer tourists, but it is centrally located between Alpine, TX and The Caverns at Carlsbad, NM, both of which would be good day trips.  We had wanted to stop at the Carlsbad Caverns, but heavy rains a couple of weeks earlier had left some roads in bad shape, so we postponed the caverns till later.
We parked at Desert Willow RV Park.  It was only $13.50 including tax for the night with Passport America.  It was level and had FHU.  We had a small tree that provided some shade.  We did use the shower and it was updated and clean.  Great for an overnight stop.

After we got parked we went to Chuy's for Mexican food.  This restaurant boasts about being the original Chuy's, not part of a chain, and the place where John Madden stops when he is traveling through.  They even had a special table set up with his name on the chair.  There were lots of pictures of him eating there with his family.  The food was great!  And the place was run by twin brothers.  Before we realized that they were twins, we were remarking how fast the man was.  Ha!

On the way back to the campground Tic noticed this "dead bug with wings" on the side of the road.  Someone had a good sense of humor, adding wings to this junked VW Bug!!
