Hood River, OR

Wednesday, July 8, 2015

Today we decided to drive to the city of  Hood River, OR to go to the Western Antique Aeroplane & Automobile Museum (WAAAM).  We took so many pictures, the museum will have to be a separate post.

However, on the drive to Hood River, we saw interesting sites on the Columbia River.

We thought this lift bridge was interesting in that it was for trains only.  This bridge stayed lifted until a train needed to cross the Columbia River.  As we are headed to Hood River this tug boat is pushing 2 large barges downriver through the bridge.
This is the tug and barges that just went under the bridge in the previous picture.

A little further down the road was a rest stop and Memaloose State Park.  We decided to stop at the rest stop.  This is part of the picnic area at the rest stop.
These cliffs are just across the Columbia River from the rest area.  The landscape along the river here is so unique. The river is really wide here.

This island is in the middle of the Columbia River.  It is named the Memaloose Island.  It is a sacred burial ground for the native indians of this area.  There are many islands in this river and according to the info plaques many of the islands are past burial grounds.

Here is another smaller island in the middle of the river.  The little light house is no longer used as a lighthouse.  The birds now use it as nesting place.

Here we saw a tunnel that turned out to be for trains.  The train tracks run along the river from the Pacific coast much farther east than Le Page Park which is as far east as we have gone.

I decided I could not stand my hair any longer and needed a hair cut.  I settled on a barber shop.  It turned out to be a fair haircut.
This is the town clock in the quaint little town of Hood River.  And it displays the correct time twice in 24 hours.  In other words, it is non-working.

We are off to the WAAAM next.
