Rapid River and Escanaba MI

Friday, August 19, 2016

Today we move from St. Ignace to Rapid River.  We left by 9am hoping to beat the rain that was predicted to start by noon.  We ended up driving through rain for a while.  The rain stopped by the time we reached our campground, Whispering Valley.

This is our parking site.  It is nice and wide and fairly level with FHU.
We did manage to get set up before the rain started.

This man is keeping an eye on our place.  Isn't he cute?!?

The sky was starting to clear.  We checked the weather radar on Tic's phone and saw it would be late evening before the rain started again.  Dusty learned that the UP (Upper Peninsula) State Fair was in Escanaba just 15 miles away.  Dusty loves fairs, so off we go.

As we walked in from the parking area, we could hear 4-H girls competing in barrel racing.  No pictures.

Fruit, vegetables and flowers were seen in the horticultural building.

The Arts & Craft building housed many quilts, crochetted & knitted items and a large section on photography.  Photography is one of our favorite sections.  There were many fantastic photographs!

One of several "fun" isles, full of games and fair food.

Of course we had to tour the animal barns.

In the middle of several of the barns was this sand sculpture.  Cute!

In the Educational Building there was this cheese carving housed in a refrigerated room.  That is the reason for the reflections on the glass.  Also in this building they have a couple of cows about to give birth.  People were sitting on bleachers waiting for the event.  We were in the building about 10-15 minutes and nothing yet.

There was also a barn full of Highland cattle.  They sure had lots of long hair.

Well, those are the highlights. It was more like a large county fair.  As we walked back towards the gate we came in, the 4-H barrel racing was still going on.  This time we saw a young girl walk her horse around the barrels. Took her 55 secs.  Great learning experience.
Still we had an enjoyable time walking around.  It is clouding up and time to head back.
