Silver Lake and Dunes

Thursday, August 4, 2016

Today we moved to Mears, MI near Silver Lake State Park.  We will be here for 4 nights.

Here is our site.  It is a long site and appears fairly level.  However, the site has deep sand.  As we lowered our jacks, the blocks under the jacks sunk into the ground a couple of inches.  It was difficult to get level, but we are managing.  We do have 50amp and water, but no sewer.

After setting up and having lunch, we decided to drive to Silver Lake State Park.
This is our first look at Silver Lake and the sand dunes there.

We found the local lighthouse.  The next several pictures tell the story.

This is looking straight up the side.  Cool effect.

The picture above and below show how crowded the beach by the lighthouse was on a Thursday afternoon.
We enjoy watching the kite-boarding.

Next we decided to go a Dune Scooter ride.

This is the dune scooter.

This video was taken during the first part of our dune scooter ride. Notice the legs sticking up in the air the end of this video.

We actually stopped and were told this person fell off the ride.  His name was Sandy.  Ha Ha

A little further along we could see Silver Lake which is inland from Lake Michigan.

In some areas there was natural grass growing.

This area even had some small scrubs.  Because of the vegetation that kept the sand from blowing around so much, this part of the dunes was considered dead since they no longer move around.

We did make it to Lake Michigan also.  Dusty had to try the water.
It was only slightly cool.

As we headed back, we saw this area that actually had tall trees growing in the valley below.  It was a fun and educational ride.
