Living Desert Zoo & Gardens, Carlsbad, NM

Thursday, June 7, 2018

This morning we are headed to the Living Desert Zoo & Gardens, which happens to be a NM state park. We are leaving to arrive by 9:30am so the heat won't be so bad.  Today's high is forecasted to be 105.

A Kestrel. All the birds here are rescued and not able to care for themselves in the wild. Many you could not see what the problem was.

Golden Eagles are common in this area. Amazing how far around he can turn his head. His head is 180 degrees around.

View from the Living Desert Zoo & Gardens. That is Brantley Lake you see in the distance, another NM State Park.

The javelinas have a nice compound.

I thought it was interesting seeing the way new cactus paddles grow.

We can see this bald eagle has a broken wing.

Look at the size of the paws on this mountain lion.

This bobcat was sleeping in a cute position.

These are blooms on a Desert Willow.

This horned owl also had a broken wing.

Look at the paddles on this cactus. It was called an elephant cactus.

The brown on this cactus were dead flowers. Strange.

There was even a water lily pond. Below is a closeup of one of the flowers.
It was 11:30am and 98 degrees outside by the time we left. I think if we had been here in the spring when everything was in bloom it would have been fantastic.

We next headed to Carlsbad Lake.
On this portion of the lake, the city of Carlsbad made a municipal park. There was also a water park. Great place for the kids.  Water was warm of course, and sandy bottom.

Over 100 degrees now so we headed home. We have several more days here.
