Seward AK Day 3

Monday, July 17, 2017

It is overcast and raining lightly.  We plan to drive to Exit Glacier today.

Exit Glacier is a glacier derived from the Harding Icefield in the Kenai Mountains of Alaska. A 1.25 mile hike takes you to the edge of the glacier.  You are no longer allowed to walk on the lower part (toe) of the glacier.

As we hiked we started coming across signs showing where the glacier used to be.  We had barely started our hike when we saw this sign.

Wow I was only 1 yr old at this point.

This was our first view of Exit Glacier. We still have a ways to go to reach the side of the glacier.

Yes it was lightly sprinkling and there was a cool breeze.

This is looking down river from the glacier.

Tic zoomed in and you can see the blue ice and the crevices causing the toe of the glacier to be dangerous to walk on.

The 2005 sign is as far as we are allowed to go.  It is probably 1/4 mile away from this sign.  The water is flowing quickly from under the glacier.

Tic saw some people about 2/3rd the way up the glacier actually walking on the glacier. We asked at the ranger station and were told there are ice walking tours available. Those tours are very strenuous, and potentially dangerous.

This is most of the glacier. You cannot see the people on it because they are so far away, but they are there.

Headed home now. It is acting like it is going to really rain again.
