Turnagain Arm Bore Tide Day 2

Tuesday, July 25, 2017

Today's goal is to watch the bore tide again this evening. It rained this morning, but has stopped and the clouds have lifted a little.  We decided to get out and take a short walk.

Our campground, Portage Valley RV, is just before this glacier, Middle Glacier. Middle Glacier is its actual name and is physically the middle glacier in a row of 3 glaciers. Our campground was under Explorer Glacier or the first glacier.

Just down the road from our campground towards Whittier, was the Williwaw State Park which had a neat walkway that was along side this creek. Creeks around here are as big as our rivers.

This walking bridge crossed the creek.  It was an easy walk and good to get out for a little while.

After this we went to the Girdwood Public Library.  I got 3  blog posts done.  Then we headed home.  We planned an early dinner so we could leave by 5:15pm to go watch the bore tide.

We got to the first site and were blessed with this bald eagle flying over looking for fish in the shallow waters.

We watched these 2 surfers head to the bore tide. It is pretty cold and windy this evening so there are not as many surfers this evening.
See the first  surfer catch the wave.

Then this guy came surfing by.  Look how high the wave is!

After the wave went by we jumped into the car and moved down the road about a mile to watch the wave go by again.
At our 2nd stop there were a lot more surfers. Notice most caught the wave.

It is so incredible to watch the bore tide come in. See the dry area in the top of the picture.  That will be completely submerged by the time the full wave goes by.

The wave will change shape according to the mud bars the wave flows over.  See how it is horseshoe shaped now?

This picture shows how high the wave actually is.

Tic zoomed in on this group.  They would paddle down river and ride the wave up for a couple of miles to where their cars are parked.  Then they get out and move down the road several miles, get back in and do it all over again all on the same wave.

This is one group getting out.  Look at the size of the waves and how it is flowing. It's amazing how fast the water flows in!

We moved about 9 miles this time.  The cloud looks like fingers grabbing the top of this mountain.

At our 3rd stop there were police.  They found live ammunition including a hand grenade.  They were "guarding" the hand grenade waiting for the bomb squad. What was so funny is that when the bore tide came by, the water covered the hand grenade. Tic said that now they not only need the bomb squad but also a scuba diver.  Ha Ha

9 miles down the road, it appears the wave is not as big, but still big enough to surf. Tic zoomed in a lot to get this picture.

As the surfers got closer, the wave looked bigger than the above picture.  It looked almost as big as further up the road.

The next 3 pictures show the water moving in so quickly.

The picture above shows a good sized mud bar. Below is the same mud bar just less than 1 minute later.
Within one minute this mud bar was completely covered.

Another evening watching some of God's marvelous wonders.
