Tok, AK

Wednesday, June 28, 2017

Today we will travel to Tok, AK.  The road is supposed to be pretty rough so we are anticipating a long slow hard ride maybe 4 hours to go 121 miles.

We camped about 15 miles east of Chicken.  It took us 55 minutes just to drive to Chicken.  We were driving about 12 miles per hour.  Talk about a rough road.

This is the Taylor "Highway" on the West side of Chicken.  After about 15 miles the road actually became asphalt.  There were lots of frost heaves so while we could travel some faster it was still slow.

These pretty little flowers were at the Mount Fairplay Wayside pullout.

This is Mount Fairplay from the wayside.

As we were getting closer to Tok we could see the Alaska Range.  See a close up below.
I zoomed in on the pointed snow/ice covered peak. Gorgeous!

The mountains are getting closer.  We are about 15 miles from Tok now.

This is our campsite at Sourdough RV Park.  It is off the Alaska Highway a little ways. Sites are semi private, mostly level and have full hookups.

After we got setup, we went to the visitors center and picked up a lot of good info for our journey through Alaska.  We asked what we should not miss and were told about a presentation on dog sledding this evening.

Above is a poster about the guy doing the presentation.  Below is his sled.  We got to meet one of his dogs. It was a great presentation.

After the mushing presentation we went back to our campground.  Sourdough RV Park holds its traditional pancake toss every night.  If you get your pancake in the bucket, you win a free breakfast.
Here is Dusty doing her best to win a free breakfast.  Nope it did not happen.  Tic did not win a free breakfast either.  It was harder than you would think.  The pancakes were made very thin so directing them was not easy.  Fun was had by all.
