Cedar Breaks National Monument & Red Canyon in Dixie National Forest

Monday, May 8, 2017

We are off to Bryce Canyon today.  It is an hour and half each way so it will be a full day!  We have packed our lunch and are excited about our excursion for the day.  (Bryce will be in the next post.)

Only a short distance from Brian Head,UT, where David and Roxanne are staying, is Cedar Breaks National Monument.  Most of it is closed until mid-May.  We did find one overlook open.

We are about 10,500 ft elevation right here.  As you can see the snow is still around.  It is melting, so most places are muddy.

The picture above and the 3 pictures below are from the only open overlook in Cedar Breaks National Monument.

Besides the white snow, there are white, pink and yellow layers in the rock formations. Spectacular!

About 12 miles from the entrance to Bryce Canyon is Red Canyon in the Dixie National Forest.

We stopped at the Red Canyon Visitor Center.
Tic took a picture of me taking a picture of Dave and Roxanne. Silly.

The following 8 pictures are taken around the Red Canyon Visitor Center.

WOW what amazing red rock formations!

Another quick stop.  Dusty awed at these intriguing formations. Above is one side of the street and below is the other side of the street.
Suddenly a "tunnel" more like a wide arch.  There were actually 2 a short distance apart, but we only got a picture of the one arch.  They look very much alike.

Well we are very close to Bryce Canyon now.  See the next post for Bryce Canyon.
