Great Salt Lake in Utah

Sunday, May 14, 2017

Today we moved to Ogden, UT.
This is one of several beautiful views on the way to Ogden.

We started seeing snow capped mountains while we were still at least an hour away.

We have arrived at Wasatch Views Estates.  It is a little run down, but fine for one night. We are staying here on Passport America.

This is Wasatch Mountain as seen from the back of the estates.

We have plenty of time to go see the Great Salt Lake.  I don't remember ever seeing it.
It was recommended that we go to Antelope Island so we did.

As we were driving out to Antelope Island, it was amazing to see snow capped mountains.

It looks like the ocean.  What looks like a beach is actually dried salt.
Nearly 4.5 billion tons of salt are dissolved in the Great Salt Lake and each year another 2.2 million tons of salt (equivalent to 70,000 boxcars!).  Almost 2 million tons of chemicals are extracted from the lake annually for commercial use.  The salinity in the lake ranges between 25 to 28 percent.

Dusty is standing near a large salt formation.

Beside the parking lot at the visitor center, we saw a few antelope.

The visitor center was on a hill.  This view shows the road to Antelope Island.

This unique rock was at the visitor center also.

There were mule deer on the island also.  I'm bad, this is a statue really!  Hee Hee!

This is a view out of one of the visitor center windows.  See the snow capped mountains in the background.

From a great distance, we saw these bison grazing near the lake shore.

Back at the visitor center, the mud martins made many nests. Here is a baby peeking out.  There are hoards and hoards of Brine flies around for the many kinds of birds here.

Tic got a great shot of this martin.

A raven nest under the roof hangover, had at least 4 baby birds in it.

There were several statues of bison all painted uniquely were scattered throughout the park.

It was an interesting excursion.  Tic took me since I'd not
seen the Great Salt Lake.

Since it is Mother's Day, Tic took me out to dinner on the way home.  We ate at a wonderful Chinese restaurant named, Dragon Restaurant.   It was not a buffet, you actually ordered off the menu.  Forgot to take pictures, but it was plenty of food and delicious. It has been a wonderful day!
