Zion National Park - Day 1

Thursday, May 4, 2017

Today we drove to Zion River RV Resort in Virgin, UT near Zion National Park. The next 2 pictures are of the views along the way.

After getting set up, we had lunch.  Since it was still early in the afternoon we decided we had plenty of time to go exploring.

After checking with the visitors center for maps and information on shuttles, we took off for the drive through the 1 mile long tunnel on UT-9 that heads east through the park then on out of the park. The following photos are of our drive.

See the "cave-looking" hole in the side of the mountain?  That is an opening in the 1-mile long tunnel.  There are 4 of these openings.

This mountain is called Checkerboard Mountain.  The checkerboard pattern was naturally formed.

We watched this small herd of big horn sheep cross the road then settled down.  We were fortunate to get pictures.  What a wonderful way to end a beautiful day!

The awesome mountains and the unique ways the weather scored the mountains was mind blowing. More tomorrow.
