The rain stopped and it is another beautiful day. We are going to visit 2 different historic sites today.
First we went to the Frontier Homestead State Park Museum in Cedar City. There are both inside and outside displays.
Above is one of the ritzy carriages. It has windows and a bell to ring to get the drivers attention if communication was desired. Below is an open carriage.
This is a funeral carriage from the late 1800s.
Water wagons like this one were used to water the streets to keep the dust down.
We were invited to climb into this replica of a stage coach. Roxanne and I tried to imagine traveling hundreds of miles like this. Ugh!
This is one of the early snowmobiles.
They had several sleighs on display. This was my favorite.
Even had a true ice box.
All the buildings outside had been moved here. This was a work shop full of tools and workbenches.
They even had an area outside devoted to the native indians of the area. Above describes them and below is a replica of a pit house.
The next several pictures are inside the home of one of the founders of Cedar City. Looks like they lived quite well!
However, they still had a outhouse. Yuck!
Above is the lower level of the school house where classes were held. The school teach had her quarters upstairs.
There was a class of school kids visiting the museum while we were there. They were doing hands-on activities, such as sitting in the school room doing work. Also some were at the laundry house doing manual laundry. They were having fun.
Next we plan to drive out west of Cedar City to Old Iron Town Historical Site.
Above and below are the same kiln used to melt the iron.
These are the ruins of some of the iron processing buildings.
A sign indicated that many of the original stones were removed by locals to build their homes. Those were the highlights of the whole place. We all felt it was a good thing there was no charge for visiting this area.
