Barstow, CA

Saturday, May 2, 2015

Today we move from Needles, CA to Barstow, CA.  When I got up at 6:20 am this morning in Needles it was 78 degrees.  Glad we are not going to be in Needles for another day.
As a side note, we were surprised to learn that there are no major grocery stores in Needles.  Residents must drive to Lake Havasu or Bullhead City in AZ to buy their groceries.  When you live in a mobile condo as we do, you don't have "room" to store much, so we shop for fresh produce often.

This is about half way to Barstow. We finally got out of the Mojave Desert and will be crossing several mountain ranges.

We decided to stay overnight at Shady Lane RV Camp since it was 3 hrs from Needles and another 3 hrs to our next destination.  In California if any vehicle is towing the MAXIMUM speed limit is 55 mph.  Slow going.
This is the office.  Cute and Crazy huh!  The streets were just wide enough to make the turns within the park.
This is our parking site. It got windy late this afternoon so it was nice to have the building next to us block the wind.  We are in shade and the temperature got up to 95 degrees.

We needed to get some groceries so we decided to go into town.  We noticed that several buildings had some neat murals.

This mural was not even close to souvenir store.  Not sure the reason for the placement of any of the murals.
This was a pretty shopping plaza on the main street of town.

Next we headed to the Barstow Harvey House at the train depot.

This cool bridge took us over the train tracks.  There were at least 6 sets of tracks just below us.
This is the Harvey House which had a hotel, restaurant and served as the train depot.

This is the plaque just outside the Harvey House.
We decided to go see the museum also.
This train model was on display.  Cool!
Inside in this room there are 3 utility cars on display.  This is only a 2 room museum.  Not very big, but a lot crammed in just 2 rooms.
They even had this fire truck on display.

We discovered that more of the original Route 66 goes through this area also.  There is even a restaurant called Peggy Sue's.
We just took a picture and did not eat there.  It is supposed to be good and reasonable priced.
Notice how the front entrance looks like a juke box.  Cute!!

We headed back to our home.  However on the corner of our turn to the RV Park were these fun looking vehicles.  I'm including 5 pictures below.

We thought they looked similar to vehicles in the original Mad Max movie.  The area around here is desolate much like in the movie also.  We stopped at the office of our RV park and asked.  We were told they were not in the Mad Max movie. They were made by a welder that enjoyed creating wild vehicles.

Well that's all the exciting stuff we saw in Barstow, CA.  We are off to Bakersfield, CA in the am.
