Driving through mountains just southwest of Lake Tahoe

Wednesday, May 20, 2015

Today is really rainy so the four of us just hung around.  All we did was laundry, movies and games.  Lots of time to visit. A good time was had by all.

It was nice first thing in the morning with thunderstorms predicted for the afternoon.  We decided to see we could get a drive in this morning.  We headed for Kit Carson Pass on Hwy 88 south and a little west of South Lake Tahoe.

This was our first stop.  This monument was erected to honor one of the pioneers, Snowshoe Thompson, in the area.  The top of the monument looked broken as talked about in the pictures.

This is the view from the above monument.  The clouds are awesome also.

In a short distance, we could tell we were headed for rain & or snow.

On down the road a little, we were impressed with the ruggedness of the mountain on one side of the road.

This lake was our view from the other side of the road.  We passed several lakes and I'm not sure the name of any of them.  It was cold and windy.
Here's a lookout on Hwy 88.  We could see the mountain was getting rain or snow.

From the same lookout, we could see this lake.  It is lightly raining here, so you see spots on the camera lens.

We stopped along side the road further down saw this water flowing making several small water falls.  Can you tell where the water is flowing?  See movie below.

After watching this short movie, you can tell where the water is and how much it was flowing.  We assumed it was from snow melt.

This rugged mountain came straight down just to the side of the road.

Notice the color in the rocks.  The color shows more because of the rain.
We rounded a sharp turn and had to stop.  These 2 multi-story buildings were on this hilltop.  We did not think we were close to civiliation.  As it turns out, we were just a few miles from the small ski community of Heavenly Village, NV.

We arrived at this high point overlooking a huge valley.  It was sunny where we were, but you can see at least 2 rain storms in the valley.  Also you can see the road we took up the mountain to this vista.

We arrived back in South Lake Tahoe not too much after this.  Beautiful drive even if it did rain some.

We all leave tomorrow.  We spent the remainder of the afternoon playing games again.  We used to get together with Dave & Roxy about every other week and play games.  We all miss those times so had to do some catchup.
