This whole post is on Louie Mattar's fabulous $75,000 car. The car is a 1947 Cadillac. Louie wanted to hold the world's endurance non-stop record across the United States, so he modified this car.
From September 20-27, 1952, 3 men took 5 hour shifts traveled 6,320 miles from San Diego to New York City. Refueling was on the run from fast moving trucks at Kansas City, MO; Omaha, NE and Camden, NJ.
Louie made a second non-stop goodwill tour from Anchorage, AK to Mexico City from August 10-28, 1954 totaling 7,482 miles.
The car weighed 8,500 pounds and holds 230 gallons of gas, 15 gallons of oil, and 30 gallons of water. The trailer is where all the liquids were stored. The car had the following features:
* Car refills radiator and changes oil on the run
* Axles drilled to inflate tires while running
* Powered catwalks for working around the car
* Cockpit features backup systems for electrical systems
* Equipment includes nation-wide mobile phone, TV, tape deck, shower and chemical toilet
* Hydraulic jacks allow tires to be changed on the run
It took 7 years and $75,000 to build without any sponsors. Amazing inventor!
