Dexter, OR Part 2

Thursday, June 11, 2015 - continued

Here we are at the Cascades Raptor Center.  They had all varieties of raptors that had been injured and could not live on their own in the wild. Most had broken wings that did not heal correctly.  This center rescued them or accepted them from other rescue facilities.  Some had come to them as fledglings and others as older birds.

This barn owl kept scrunching his head down and looking at us.
This is a closeup of a osprey.  I've never seen one up close like this.  All the birds are outdoors and the cages are constructed of heavy wire only about 1/2 inch by 3/4 inch. You can see the wire in the background.  It was difficult to get a clear picture of some of the birds.

This is a black-billed magpie.  Magpies are not a variety of raptor.  However raptors have been know to take over magpie nests.

This is a Cooper's Hawk.
This Northern Goshawk was preening and fluffing itself.

This is a Gyrfalcon.  Pretty.

This is one of several bald eagles.  Some are sitting on infertile eggs.  This is supposed to be preparing the eagles to accept some fledglings that are coming to the facility soon.

This rough-legged hawk was very active.  Tic did good to catch this picture.

This long-eared owl sat so still you weren't sure whether it was alive or stuffed.  He finally blinked.

This is a red-shouldered hawk.  See how the solid red stops at the shoulders.

This Ferruginous Hawk has beautiful coloring on his back.

This is a Saker Falcon.  They come in a variety of colorings.  They all don't look just like this one.

There were several kinds of flowers at the Visitors Center.  Tic got the following 3 pictures of 3 different flowers.

As we headed back home, we decided to drive through the Dexter state park.  We found the road that led to the river at the bottom of the Dexter dam.
There were lots of people fishing for salmon.  We could see salmon jumping and swimming upstream.  Once they got to the dam, they just floated back downstream and started over again.  The fishermen told us that since the salmon were not hungry, they were trying to snag them as they floated back downstream.  We did not see anyone catch any fish.  We watched for a little bit then went home.
