Lincoln City, OR Day 2

Saturday, June 13, 2015

Today we woke to a beautifully sunny day. We decide it would be a good day to drive south on the coast highway.  We were advised to drive northward non-stop to our RV sites.  Then drive south on the coastal highway.  That way the pullouts are on the right side of the road, making it easy to pull in and out.

Mr. Seagull was first to greet us at our first stop, Boiler Bay.  The seagulls are large here.

The rocks in the bay cause the water to churn.  I can see why they named this bay Boiler Bay.

The tide is coming in.  Look how the waves crash against the rocks.

Aren't the waves awesome!?!

A still just doesn't show the power of the ocean.

Can anyone guess where we are?

This is the view looking southward from the Cape Foulweather visitor center.  Stunning!!

Now we are at Devil's Punchbowl in Cape Perpetua. Unfortunately we are here at low tide and it is very unimpressive.

Looking southward from this same point was a beach with lots of people trying to surf.  We watched about 5 minutes and did not see one person catch a wave.

This is looking straight down from the Devil's Punchbowl viewpoint.

This is looking westward from the park at the visitors center.  Can you tell we were impressed with this place?!

Next we turned into the Yaquina Head Outstanding Natural Area headed to the Yaquina Lighthouse.  We stopped at the interpretive center first.  Just outside the doors the forest service had a scope set up to view the baby peregrine falcons.

Look closely and you will see 4 birds.  They are about 5 weeks old now and have not left their nest yet.  The mother disappeared 10 days ago so only the father is left to feed them.

To everyone's surprise, one of the babies flew a short distance to this rock close to the nest.  Tic happen to be focused on the nest and got this picture. Cool!

This short video is of the babies chirping loudly because they think they see their father is bring more food.

This the Yaquina Head Lighthouse from down the hill.  I learned that lighthouses on the Pacific are not painted differently.  However each has a different flashing pattern.

This view was looking straight down from the path to the lighthouse.  Notice the flat area of the rocks on the upper left.
Now see the picture below.

These seals look like they are enjoying the sun!

We could hike down to the shore.  It was the most unusual "beach" I'd ever experienced.
This was the "beach".  Yes it was all large black rocks.  No sand at all.

We headed on down the road and pulled in at Devil's Churn.
Another breathtaking rock formation.  The seaweed looks like creatures in the water.  Too bad we are at low tide.

This is Devil's Churn just a little south of Cape Perpetua.

We walked down the hill a little.  This is the stairs up this steep part.

Once we got up the stairs the path took us through the trees back to the parking lot.  Yes that is Dusty walking ahead.

This is the bridge that crosses the bay at Newport, OR.
This is the Newport harbor full of fishing boats.

It was dinner time by now and we wanted to try some of the fresh fish.  We were told that the Local Ocean restaurant faced the harbor.  It is owned and run by wives of the local fishermen so fish is fresh.  We decided to have dinner there.

The servings around us looked large so we only ordered one meal and shared it. This is halibut and veggies.  This is my half of the meal.  Yummy!!

I was fascinated with the pretty little blue flowers at the table.  Yes they are live.  I have no idea what they are.

We headed back home now.
