Colorado River Recreation Area and La Sal Mountain Loop Drive

Tuesday, September 15, 2015

It was raining when we got up this morning, so we decided we would stick around home.  Change of plans.  The sun came out by 11am, so we decided on a drive, just in case it rained again.

We decided to drive along the Colorado River and take the La Sal Mountain Loop Drive.

Just before the road crosses the Colorado River there is a parking area for hikers and bikers.  This tunnel goes from the parking lot under the road to the Colorado River.
This hiking or biking bridge crosses the Colorado.  Some people actually bicycle from town all through Arches National Park.

This unique rock was on the other side of the river.

This is looking down river from on the walking bridge.

This is further up river looking back at the walking bridge.

The picture above and the 10 pictures below are all taken while driving along the Colorado River.  We were impressed with the cliff walls and rock formations.

Not too long after this we turned onto the La Sal Mountain Loop Drive.

There were more fantastic rock formations and views.  During the drive we climbed to 8830ft elevation.  The following pictures are from the Mountain Loop Drive.

The clouds are starting to build.

Here's our wildlife spotting for the day!

The formation on the left is called the Castle and the formations on the right is called Fisher Tower.

Look at the clouds flowing over the mountain.
Another angle of the Castle and Fisher Tower.
Here we are driving up the mountain and looking back.

The clouds are getting thicker.

At the top we could "see forever".  It almost looks like the Grand Canyon.  This picture and the one below fail to show the majesty of this area!

By the time we headed down the other side of the mountain, the skies had started to clear.  It was a beautiful drive.
