Sedona, AZ Day 4 - Part 3

Friday, April 17, 2015  3rd and Final for this day

The last place we visited today was the V Bar V Ranch Historic Site.

The V-Bar-V Heritage Site is the largest known petroglyph site in the Verde Valley of central Arizona, and one of the best-preserved. The rock art site consists of 1,032 petroglyphs in 13 panels.

Ranch History

The land that would eventually become the V Bar V Ranch was homesteaded at the turn of the 20th century. The owners branded their cattle "100," and the ranch was initially known as the "100 Place."

The V Bar V Ranch was formed in 1927, when the 100 Place and a number of smaller holdings, including one owned by the Bradford family, originators of the V Bar V brand, were bought and incorporated into the V Bar V Cattle Co.

The Ranch has passed through a colorful cast of owners since its inception, and is now owned by The University of Arizona College of Agriculture and Life Sciences. It is operated as a unit of the Arizona Agricultural Experiment Station.

The path is obvious and about a 1/4 mile walk to the site.

The ranger was knowledgeable and enthusiastic and happily answered everyone's questions.

This is the protected area where most of the etchings were found.
Examples follow.  I will not try to remember what each symbol might have meant, but they were about fertility, calendar seasons, and your best guess.

This one looks like the Pink Panther to me!

Now, .... was that not fun?
