Today we moved to Monarch Campground in Yoho National Park. On our drive leaving Revestoke we went through 8 tunnels as we drove through Rogers Pass. According to the Rogers Pass Discovery Centre, the tunnels are to help keep the roads passable when avalanches occur.
Monarch Campground is glorious!
This is our parking site at Monarch Campground.
This will be our first night boondocking. (Boondocking means no electric, water or sewer.) We are just about 15 miles from Lake Louise Alberta. Our plan is to get parked and settled and drive to Lake Louise for pictures.
From our campsite, above is the view looking southward and below is the view looking northward. WOW! What a campsite.
In another part of the campground the Kicking Horse River runs through it. You drive across this bridge to get to some of the other campsites. Below is a picture of the river while standing on the bridge.
We are set up and had lunch, so off to Lake Louise we go.
The drive to Lake Louise was dramatic. Almost too much eye candy!
This looks like an avalanche ready to happen.
I took this panorama of Lake Louise with my phone. The following 2 pictures are Lake Louise also.
This stream flows from Lake Louise.
Lake Moraine. It is still partly frozen over.
Look at this mountain range just behind Moraine Lake,
More mountains around Moraine Lake.
We are heading back to our campground now.
The views are totally different when you are headed in the opposite direction. So much splendor!
This sign indicates frost heaves coming. We've seen many of these signs, and expect to see more as we head North.
Ski slopes near Lake Louise. We saws this as we were driving out of Moraine Lake.
Interesting bridge over the Trans-Canadian Hwy 1.
Of course this is the only time of year for road repairs. There was a lot of construction on our drive to and from Lake Louise.
Trains run across Canada closely following the Trans-Canadian Hwy1. However in Kicking Horse Pass which crosses the continental divide, the trains circle deep into the mountains on both sides of the valley. The 2 giant underground loops the trains make are the Spiral Tunnels. Below you can see one entrance/exit. People were standing around like they were expecting a train any minute. I never saw a train but only stayed about 5 minutes.
I cannot seem to describe the stunning beauty adequately. All I can say is it is glorious! And photos do not capture the majesty. Come see for yourself!
