Whitehorse, YT

Wednesday, June 21, 2017

Today we head to Whitehorse, YT which is the capital of Yukon Territory since April 1, 1953.  Before that Dawson City was the capital of Yukon Territory.

We started our morning see this large black bear.  We learned that black bears can also look brown.  You can tell the difference by the shape of their face and black bears do not have a shoulder hump.

We decided to leave the Alaska Highway and take a short detour through Tagish.  This is the Tagish Bridge crossing the Tagish (Six Mile) River.

As I walked out on the bridge to get pictures, there were several seagulls.  This one stayed put until I could almost touch it.

Such a beautiful view from the bridge.

We have now connected with the Klondike Highway headed for the Alaska Highway again. We are driving along side of Emerald Lake which is 7 miles long.

If I read correctly, we are looking at the White Mountain range.

After we got back on the Alaska Highway, we saw this big black bear.  It was funny, he was on one side of the highway and actually looked both directions as if checking for traffic. We stopped and the oncoming car also stopped, so he crossed the highway.  He was moving quickly when I got this picture. That is why it is a little blurry.

We made it to Whitehorse by about 12:30pm.  As you can see the sun did come out.  Wonderful!

This is the Yukon River just outside of town.  The river turns and actually runs through town.

This is our campsite at Hi Country RV Campground.  It was mostly level and had full hookups.  It is narrow and close to our neighbors.  No problem; we will be exploring most of the time.
This day was Summer Solstice; we only had two hours of dusk, it never got really dark.
