On our way from Chimacum to here, Ferndale, we drove through Deception Pass. There was not place to park the coach, so we could not stop. I took several pictures through the coach windows, but they had lots of glare. So today we decided to drive back to Deception Pass.
It is a gorgeous day and we are glad we returned to get pictures. You will be glad too.
As we headed south on I-5 the trees got thicker and the hills taller. It was beautiful.
There are actually 2 bridges at deception pass. I found this picture on the internet so you could see. The island in the middle is named Pass Island. The water passage to the left or south of the island is named Deception Pass. The water passage to the right or north is named Canoe Pass. We walked across both bridges round trip 3 times. Lots of steps today!
This is the shorter of the two bridges.
The water was very turbulent. That is how Deception Pass got its name. The first European explorers to map the area in the 1700's mistakenly thought the turbulence meant a mightly river to the east. When they discovered that was wrong they named this Deception Pass.
I just decided to add this picture showing the map layout.
The picture above show the pass between Fidalgo Island on the right or north side and Whidbey Island on the left or south side.
This is the west point of Pass Island in the middle.
Here are several boats coming into and going out of the Pass. See how small they look. All our pictures are taken from the bridges or close to the bridges.
This picture is looking out from the pass towards Deception Island.
This is looking through one of the bridges. There were stairs that led down under the bridges so you could walk on both sides of the bridges without crossing the very busy highway.
This picture is looking into the bay at Strawberry Island.
This is the east or bay side of Pass Island.
Another view of Strawberry Island. It was so beautiful we kept taking different perspectives of the same area.
This picture shows the water going the other side of Pass Island.
This is from Pass Island looking at Strawberry Island again.
Here is one of the sets of stairs going down to cross under the bridge.
It is so beautiful here and a beautiful day to boot! We are so blessed!
We are standing on the shorter bridge between Pass Island and Fidalgo Island looking down the cliffs of Fidalgo Island.
Dusty is walking across the longer of the bridges.
The wake this boat is creating is just beautiful to me.
This shows both one of the bridges and the stairs.
I was on the shorter bridge and was pointing to a seal or sea lion I could see. Hope I have not put too many pictures of Deception Bay.
From here we headed back north towards home.
This panoramic view is Samish Bay.
Samish Bay is beautiful also. There are 2 tiny looking ships that are actually very large cargo ships. One is in the center of the picture and the other is to the left side near the mountains.
The water looks striped close in this little cove. Interesting!
Next we headed to the grocery store. We were very glad we drove back to see these areas.
