Thursday, August 6, 2015 - Part 1
Today our adventure takes us to the Kitsap Peninsula. We plan to go to Port Gamble and Bremerton.
Here we are crossing the Hood Canal Bridge. It is nearly 1.5 miles long and 1.23 miles of it is floating on pontoons. It is the longest floating bridge in saltwater tidal basin in the world and the 3rd longest floating bridge overall. This bridge also has a retractable draw span. On our way back home we had to wait about 30 minutes because the draw span had opened.
This is the view in the middle of the bridge as we crossed.
Port Gamble was a charming little town.
This is the main street in town. You can see me parking the Jeep.
This flagpole was at the end of the street and on the edge of the bay.
This is looking out over the bay.
This was not far from the end of the street near the bay.
This was the general store, cafe and museum all in one.
This Camperdown Elm tree was beside the General Store. The tree was sort of like a tent inside. We did not actually measure it and the shade made it difficult to get a picture, but we are guessing it was about equivalent to a 10 x 10 area. Look how big it looks around me. The Camperdown Elm cannot reproduce itself so must be grafted to only a Scotch Elm to grow.
This is the trunk of the tree. It is 7 ft in circumference and only takes up a small amount of the room under the branches.
This stately home was near the Camperdown Elm. I love older homes like this.
This is St. Paul's Church modeled after the Congregational Church of East Machias, Maine. It is now used as a wedding chapel.
This stately building had a gift store on the left side, post office in the middle and it looked like possibly someone lived on the right side as you look at the building. Notice all the flowers. They are all dahlias. The lady told us there are 42 varieties of dahlias and between this garden and another one on the back side. The flowers were so beautiful that we took tons of pictures. I'm going to make a separate post of only dahlias. See the next post.
