Indian and Marrowstone Islands in Puget Sound

Wednesday, August 5, 2015

Today we are going to explore a couple of small islands in Puget Sound just off the coast from Port Hadlock.
Just after we crossed the bridge onto Indian Island, we saw this man fishing way out in his waders.

This large blue heron was on another part of the shoreline.

We discovered this was the highlight of Indian Island.  We crossed onto Marrowstone Island and headed to Fort Flagler.

The first thing we saw was this battery.
All the guns have been removed from this battery.  This battery is one of three in this area that guarded the Puget Sound during World War I.

See the rails on the ceiling.  We are not sure if they were used to move large guns or ammunition.  We walked in one side of the U-shaped building and could walk all they way through and come out the other side.  It was very dark (I used my cell phone flashlight).  The sounds echoed well.  It was fun making noises.

As we proceeded down the road, we saw this facility.  It used to be a Coast Guard facility.  The Coast Guard closed it and now it houses the USGS Western Fisheries Research Center.

Wow look at the size of this ship that passed by.

Some of the houses have been restored and are now Vacation Housing.

A little ways down the beach was battery #3.  A couple of the big guns are still here.

This is one of the big guns you can see in the prior picture.

After dinner we decided to take a walk through the RV park here.

As you can see, there were lots of pretty flowers.

More adventures tomorrow.  Good night for now.
